How To Install a Chartplotter or Fishfinder

Fishing, Boating and others

So you have make the leap and purchased a new fishfinder for your boat, kayak or Jetski. Not 100% sure how to install it? Well you have come to the right place, welcome to the Burnsco How to guide for fishfinder installation.

The process of installing a fishfinder is a pivotal step in enhancing your fishing endeavors. This video and guide are designed to provide you with clear and structured instructions, catering to anglers of all experience levels. From the careful selection of the optimal transducer location to the precise connection of the display unit. Lets dive into it.

Head Unit Installation

1. Cut out the paper template supplied with the combo unit. Place it on the dash and choose the best location.

2. Use masking tape to fix the template into its exact position.

3. The template shows which size drill bits you need. Using the correct drill bits, drill the mounting holes and the pilot holes.

4. Enlarge the holes with a whole saw drill bit so that it is ready for the jigsaw work.

5. Remove the paper template. Use a pencil and ruler to draw the cutting guidelines for the jigsaw work.

6. When using the jigsaw, place the blade slightly inside your guidelines, so that you don’t cut too wide.

7. Use a file to smooth any sharp edges.

8. Check that the head unit fits snugly into the hole. If it doesn’t fit, look from the rear of the dash. It’s easier to see from this angle what is causing the problem. File off any edges that are causing an issue.

TIP: Apply masking tape 48mm wider than the cutting guidelines to ensure your dash isn’t scratched or damaged by your tools.

SAFETY TIP: Use protective glasses for protection from shards of metal. Use ear muffs– being inside the boat will amplify the noise.

Wiring

1. Put terminal ends on the negative and the positive and add an inline fuse.

2. Add a space fuse.

3. Place this assembly directly on the positive and negative busbars.

4. This way we will use the on/off switch on the unit itself, rather than going through the switch panel.

The Transducer

1. Using your transducer bracket as a guide, mark the fixing holes with a pencil. Drill holes using a cordless drill.

2. Duralac your screws and fix the mounting bracket into place.

3. Check the level of your screws. Consider how the boat will be sitting in the water and what would be level to the waterline at trolling speed.

4. Use Sikaflex or clips to run your transducer cable away from any areas where it may snag.

5. If the cable is in an exposed area, we recommend using protective tubing.

6. Run the remaining transducer cable up the length of the boat to the head unit, cable tying as you go to keep it tidy.
